OfS Survey Highlights Need for Practical Safety Skills for Students

Published At: Mon 17 Nov 2025

The Office for Students (OfS) has published the first nationwide survey exploring sexual harassment and sexual violence in higher education in England. The results are sobering: 14% of respondents reported experiencing sexual violence and one in four reported sexual harassment during their studies. Certain groups, including women and LGB students, were more likely to experience these incidents.

While universities are required to provide training, publish clear procedures and protect students from conflicts of interest, the survey highlights that many students still find themselves facing challenging situations with limited practical guidance.

Students like Molly, who shared her experience with the BBC, illustrate the difficulties some face in accessing timely and effective support. She describes navigating her first year with limited assistance and the toll this took on her mental wellbeing. Experiences such as hers show how valuable early preparation can be in helping students feel confident and safe as they adjust to university life.

Bridging the Gap with Practical Training

Universities provide essential education and guidance but young people are often entering new environments for the first time: shared accommodation, social settings and independent travel. These are situations where practical skills in personal safety and managing difficult behaviours can make a real difference.

SecuriCare’s Personal Safety Training equips young people with tools to:

  • Recognise and respond safely to risky situations

  • Set boundaries confidently

  • Support friends who may be at risk

  • Navigate social and public environments with greater awareness

Training is proactive rather than reactive, giving students confidence to manage challenging situations before they arise.

Supporting Students Before They Leave Home

The OfS survey provides valuable insight into the experiences of students, highlighting the importance of equipping young adults with practical skills alongside academic learning. Personal Safety Training complements the support universities provide, helping students transition safely and confidently into independent life.

Providing students with these tools isn’t about assuming the worst or creating fear, it’s about empowering them to stay safe, recognise risks early and support others when needed.
