NHS Secure Unit Approves SecuriCare Soft Mitt Restraint System
Published At: Fri 29 May 2026
SecuriCare is pleased to announce that our Soft Mitt Restraint System has recently been approved for use within an NHS Secure Psychiatric Unit following completion of the organisation’s internal risk assessment process.
As part of the implementation, Karl and Phil will be delivering training to the unit’s team in July, supporting staff in the safe and appropriate use of the system within their environment.
The approval highlights the growing focus across healthcare and secure settings on identifying equipment options that support safer working practices for both staff and patients receiving care.
Supporting Safer Care Environments
The SecuriCare Soft Mitt System was developed as an alternative to traditional wrist restraints, providing a softer option to support patients and staff.
Designed and developed in consultation with customers across healthcare and specialist sectors, the system is currently used by NHS Mental Health Services, US Psychiatric Services and helicopter crews.
The Soft Mitts are intended to help prevent injury or harm while supporting care or medical intervention where appropriate and authorised within organisational policies and procedures.
Designed for Transport and Escort Situations
One of the key features of the Soft Mitt System is its suitability for transportation and escorting situations.
The Soft Mitts are designed to secure a person’s hands to the front of the body, making them suitable for use during transport in:
-
Cars
-
Buses
-
Road ambulances
-
Air ambulances
-
Aircraft
-
Cruise ships and ferries
When used alongside the SecuriCare Securing Belt, the Soft Mitts can be secured to the front or side of the individual depending on operational requirements and risk assessments.
This can support organisations seeking practical solutions for managing risk during movement and transport, where maintaining safety for everyone involved is essential.
Flexible Design to Meet Operational Needs
The Soft Mitt Restraint System is available with or without access vents, allowing access to the restrained person’s hands or fingers where required.
The Soft Mitts can also be fitted singularly for easier application before being joined together or secured to the belt system.
Importantly, the SecuriCare Soft Mitt Restraint System has undergone a full Independent Medical Risk Assessment.
Training and Safe Use
As with any safety or restraint-related equipment, implementation must always be supported by robust organisational procedures, risk assessments and properly trained staff.
SecuriCare continues to work with organisations across healthcare, transport and specialist sectors to provide both equipment and practical training designed to support safer operational practices.
We look forward to working with the NHS Secure Psychiatric Unit team during their training programme in July.
