Preventing and managing distressed, disruptive, challenging and hazardous behaviours
A learning resource for those supporting and caring for young people.
The aim of this booklet is to help those who work with children to understand the reasons for distressed or disruptive behaviours, with a view to developing a range of approaches that will prevent and de-escalate situations, thereby reducing the need for restrictive interventions.
The course utilises the principles of Positive Behaviour Support, which are designed to identify functions of behaviour, remove or reduce triggers and de-escalate situations. It also covers the need to maintain safety if behaviours cause a potential danger to the child or others around them. (This booklet is also available in Spanish).
