Rethinking SEND Bases: From Reflection to Genuine Support
Published At: Tue 14 Apr 2026
In many schools today, SEND bases are increasingly being positioned as spaces where pupils can reflect on their behaviour. On the surface, this might sound supportive by giving children a chance to calm down and think.
However, in practice these spaces can sometimes function less as opportunities for reflection and more as removal from the classroom. When a child becomes dysregulated, overwhelmed, upset or acting out, they are taken aside, asked to sit quietly (a challenging skill in itself) and ‘reflect.’
The question is: what are they actually reflecting on?
Behaviour as Communication
If we see behaviour as a form of communication for an expression of unmet needs, feelings or underlying difficulties, then it’s worth considering what message children are receiving in these moments.
-
Are we helping them understand what they’re experiencing?
-
Are we guiding them to make sense of their feelings and behaviours?
-
Or are we simply removing them from the environment without context, without understanding and without support?
The Risk of Isolation
Without guided, restorative conversations led by a skilled adult who can support co-regulation, unpack the emotional state and teach alternative, functional behaviours, what children experience in these spaces is not reflection. It’s isolation. Isolated children may internalise the message that when they struggle, they are to be removed and silenced.
This approach carries risks: it unintentionally reinforces the very message that when things get tough, the solution is to exclude.
That’s not inclusion; it’s punishment.
Making Reflection Meaningful
Reflection becomes meaningful when a trained adult is present to guide it: supporting co-regulation, exploring emotions and teaching constructive alternatives. Without this guidance, SEND bases risk being experienced as isolation rather than support and children may leave unsure of how to manage their feelings or express their needs.
This isn’t about blaming staff, teachers and support workers are often doing their best under challenging circumstances. The focus is on practice: are our systems creating opportunities for learning and growth or are they inadvertently reinforcing removal as a default response?
True Inclusion in Practice
True inclusion requires more than simply providing a space. It relies on adults who can regulate themselves, repair relationships, and understand the underlying reasons behind behaviour. Policies should aim to teach, support and intervene, creating environments where children feel safe to express themselves, develop essential skills and learn from their experiences. It requires patience, skill and a genuine commitment to understanding each child's needs.
SEND Bases as Spaces for Growth
SEND bases should be spaces for understanding, growth and skill development, not just quiet moments, holding rooms for compliance or pauses from the classroom. If we truly believe that behaviour is communication, then our responses must be rooted in curiosity, empathy and a readiness to understand, rather than containment and exclusion.
Supporting children means prioritising relationships, emotional literacy and practical strategies to help them express themselves safely and constructively. For school staff, the emphasis must be on skill development so that when challenging situations arise, they are met with confidence and with the best possible outcomes.
When reflection is guided and supportive, SEND bases can become spaces where children learn, not just step aside. Only then can we move toward a truly inclusive approach that respects and nurtures every child's potential.
