Quick Overview

This course provides learners with a detailed introduction to working with individuals who have been diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's syndrome. It is aimed at deepening their understanding and therefore enhancing the quality of support they are able to provide.

Staff who deal with clients, diagnose with Autism or Aspergers, in a health or social care setting.

Behaviours associated with the autistic spectrum can appear illogical and mysterious for people unfamiliar with the condition. All too frequently, the person with autism is seen as a loner, or “in a world of their own,” leading  to a reluctance on the part of some services to take an inclusive approach to care.

This full-day course is designed for people whose employing service primarily cares for people with an autistic spectrum disorder. All elements of the course are designed to meet unit requirements of the QCF system, at levels 2 and 3

  • Autism – The Triad of Difficulties: Social Communication, Social Interaction, Social Imagination
  • The World of Autism – the need for Routine, Symmetry and Consistency
  • Care and Treatment approaches
  • Carers and attribution  - the need to view the world from the service-user’s perspective
  • Working with Challenging Behaviour

Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion.

Learner’s knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning.
