Securicare

Managing Challenging Behaviour

Training Rationale

SecuriCare are committed to delivering high quality, cost effective training that meets the unique needs of our clients.  In the area of ‘Physical intervention' training, it is essential that the programme reflects the needs of the staff and service users and is designed and delivered to the highest standard.

In order to ensure these standards are met, SecuriCare adhere to a set of core principles:

Programme development

  1. SecuriCare will undertake to complete a full ‘audit’ of the types of behaviour faced by staff within an organisation to ensure only the appropriate techniques are included in the training specification
  2. SecuriCare will always ensure that any individualised or client specific strategy is developed in full consultation with client and service user representatives
  3. SecuriCare will subject all techniques to full and thorough risk assessment to ensure they are safe, and suitable for purpose
  4. Securicare will undertake to complete an annual review the effectiveness of the selected techniques, to ensure their continued appropriateness
  5. SecuriCare will ensure that any changes to the programme are in conjunction with, and agreed by, appropriate representatives of the client organisation

Training delivery:

  1. Securicare will always advise clients that physical intervention training should follow non-physical intervention training
  2. SecuriCare will always operate with a suitable ratio of trainers to delegates (usually 12 to 1)
  3. The instructor will always make delegates aware of safe training guidelines, before the session starts
  4. The instructor will always emphasise the rights of service users
  5. The instructor will always stress the importance of preventative strategies such as customer service, empathy, communication skills, anger management techniques, calming and de-escalation techniques, time out and other non-physical intervention before considering physical inervention
  6. The instructor will always stress the importance of operating within the spirit of organisational policy and values
  7. The instructor will always stress the importance of responding ‘lawfully’ to any incidents arising, including reference where appropriate to sector specific regulations and guidance
  8. The instructor will always teach ‘physical intervention strategies’ within the context of a ‘technique of last resort’
  9. The instructor will always emphasise the importance of utilising appropriate ‘physical intervention’ techniques
  10. The instructor will always emphasise the importance of using the ‘gradient of control’ or a ‘progressive/behaviour led’ model
  11. The instructor will always emphasise the importance of reducing or removing the physical intervention at the first opportunity
  12. The instructor will always stress the importance of adequate and appropriate aftercare
  13. The instructor will always stress the importance of management strategies, including planning, monitoring and review
  14. The instructor will complete a systematic review of delegates learning and skill retention

We are also able to offer clients a personalised photo catalogue or DVD containing all physical skills contained in the agreed programme.
