HSE Approved First Aid At Work (3 Day)

This programme has been developed for:

Staff who are nominated as First Aider's in the workplace, or for those employees wanting a more detailed introduction to First Aid. The course is recommended for the work place First Aider and comlpies with current Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

The delivery of the course is set out over three day’s covering a wide range of first aid emergencies and how to deal with them confidently and efficiently.

On successful completion of the course, and required physical assessments, candidates will be awarded a “First Aid at Work” certificate approved for the purpose of the Health and Safety (first aid) regulations 1981, which is valid for three years.

The aim of this programme is:

To enable staff to respond positively and effectivley to a variety of common injuries and illnesses, prior to the arrival of qualified medical assistance.

The topics covered include:

  • Understanding the role of a First Aider including reference to :

: The importance of cross infection;

: The need for recording incidents and infection;

: Use if available equipment;

  • Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act in a safe/prompt and effective manner in an emergency
  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty who is unconscious ( including seizure)
  • Administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty who is choking
  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty who is suffering from shock
  • Providing appropriate First Aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters.
  • Recognising the presence of major illnesses and provide appropriate First Aid ( including Heart attack, Stroke, Epilepsy, Asthma, Diabetes
  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty with:

: Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries;

-          Chest injuries;

-          Burns and Scalds;

-          Eye injuries;

-          Sudden poisoning;

-          Anaphylactic shock;

Method of delivery and assessment:

There are two practical assessments carried out at the end of the course, (CPR skills, and Incident Management)
