Managing Challenging Behaviour

Breakaway or Disengagement Skills

This programme has been developed for:

Staff who interact with service users who may become physically challenging.  Some occupations require staff to perform tasks that may expose them to physical aggression.

Staff who deal with members of the general public; this includes public services, retail, leisure, licensed trade, public transport, health and social care as well as security.

Staff who perform tasks that may expose them to the risk of angry, threatening or aggressive behaviour.

In particular staff who have a foreseeable risk of encountering physical violence.

Includes techniques otherwise known as separation skills, escape techniques and safe releases.

The aim of this programme is:

To enable staff to reduce the risk of escalation during the initial stages of physical ‘encounter’, change position, step back or move away from potential danger.

These skills enable staff to remain in control and communicate over a longer period of time, further reducing the risk of escalation to full physical violence.

The topics covered include:

  • Understanding the Law in relation to the ‘Use of Force’
  • Understanding the terms appropriate and proportionate
  • Understanding the correct use of personal space, posture and positioning to reduce escalation and prevent injury
  • Respond safely, appropriately and lawfully to strikes, grabs and other physical provocation
  • Take reasonable action when disengaging or escaping from the aggressor

A client specific programme will be designed to meet the unique needs of staff and service users and to be in-line with appropriate risk assessments.
