Managing Challenging Behaviour

Combined Programme (4 day)

Securicare run regular 'open' training programmes at venues in York and Maidstone.  These programmes are designed to provide training in the prevention and management of challenging behaviour.  These three & four-day programmes allow staff to attend individually or in small groups.  Candidates attend the programme based on local risk assessment, e.g. staff attend either on day 1, 1+2, 1,2+3, or 1,2,3+4 days depending on local need.

This programme has been developed for:

Staff who interact with service users who may express challenging, threatening or violent behaviour.

Staff whose company risk assessements have identified a need for training

The aim of this programme is:

To develop staff knowledge and confidence in the prevention and management of challenging, angry, threatening or aggressive behaviour.

Day 1: Conflict management:

  • Relevant guidance and legislation
  • Identifying why people become challenging, angry, threatening and aggressive
  • Promoting positive behaviours 
  • Minimising the likelihood of conflict and confrontation
  • Understanding and managing the ‘fight or flight’ response
  • When and how to be assertive
  • De-escalating and calming
  • Post incident procedures

Day 2: Breakaway skills:

  • Understanding the Law in relation to the ‘Use of Force’
  • Understanding the terms appropriate and proportionate
  • Understanding the correct use of personal space, posture and positioning to reduce escalation and prevent injury
  • Respond safely, appropriately and lawfully to strikes, grabs and other physical provocation
  • Take reasonable action when disengaging or escaping from the aggressor

Day 3: Physical intervention skills:

  • The law and the use of force
  • Understanding physical intervention
  • Non-restrictive techniques
  • Partially restrictive techniques
  • Appropriate aftercare

Day 4: Physical intervention skills:

  • Recap/skill consolidation session
  • Fully restrictive techniques
  • Managing prone and supine individuals
  • Relocation processes
  • Incident analysis

Method of delivery and assessment:

Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion.

Learner’s knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning.
