Managing Challenging Behaviour

Basic Physical Intervention skills

This programme has been developed for:

Staff who are required to intervene in work related incidents of physical violence where safety is compromised and all other non-physical intervention has, or would have failed.

Staff who perform tasks that may expose them to the risk of angry, threatening, aggressive or violent behaviour.

Staff who deal with members of the general public; this includes public services, retail, leisure, licensed trade, public transport, health and social care as well as security.

Specifically those with responsibility for taking over incidents that have escalated, performing security functions and/or containing or controlling physically violent persons.

Including vulnerable service users, such as children, elderly or frail persons as well as clients with mental health or learning disabilities.

Includes techniques otherwise known as; safe handling techniques, positive holding skills, strong holding & escorts.

The aim of this programme is:

To build upon prior learning; ‘managing conflict and confrontation’ and ‘breakaway techniques’.

To provide learners with the knowledge and skill necessary to know when to physically intervene and when not to.

To enable them to apply appropriate techniques in order to ‘stabilise’ and ‘relocate’ individuals whose behaviour presents a risk.

The topics covered include:

  • The law and the use of force
  • Understanding physical intervention
  • Non-restrictive techniques
  • Partially restrictive techniques
  • Fully restrictive techniques
  • Appropriate aftercare

A client specific programme will be designed to meet the unique needs of staff and service users, and will be in-line with appropriate risk assessments.

A full set of learning outcomes or a lesson plan can be provided on request.

Method of delivery and assessment:

Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and disscusion.

Delegate knowledge is checked using Q&A or written tests.

Physical capabilities are checked using observation and demonstration.

Duration of training:

1 day to 5 days depending on a clients unique requirements.
