WHO IS THIS COURSE DESIGNED FOR?
SecuriCare offers one of the best physical intervention courses in the UK. The course is aimed at staff working in care settings and who support individuals may exhibit behaviours that challenge, including physically challenging, unsafe or dangerous behaviours which may require physical intervention.
SecuriCare is an ICM Quality Award centre (as recognised by the Department of Health in 'Positive and Proactive Care').
TRAINING AIMS
- Physical Intervention training includes techniques that may be required to safely prompt, guide, support, hold or move service users whose behaviour necessitates staff physical intervention
- Training in the use of physical intervention skills is provided in conjunction with training in:
- Risk assessment
- The role of individual care and support plans
- Strategies for promoting alternative behaviours
- Preventing aggressive, violent, unsafe or high risk behaviours
- Non-physical methods of responding to aggressive or violent behaviour
Training Structure:
- An overview of the Guidance for Restrictive Physical Interventions
- Relevant national guidance and legislation
- The importance of an appropriate values base
- Staff accountability and decision making
- Understanding how gender and cultural diversity may affect the use of physical contact or intervention
- Understanding how age and physical development affects the use of physical contact or intervention
- Common contra-indications for use of physical interventions
- The difference between "escorting", "touching" and "holding"
- Understanding and applying the "gradient of control" concept
- Avoiding potentially dangerous postures and positions
- Known mechanisms for injury and fatality
- Active and reactive monitoring strategies
- Appropriate aftercare and support
- A client specific person centred programme can be designed to meet the unique needs of staff and service users and to be in-line with appropriate care plans and risk assessments.
Course content is finalised following a full training needs analysis.
DELIVERY/ASSESSMENT
The physical Intervention course includes a formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion.
Learners knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning.
