WHO IS THE COURSE DESIGNED FOR? 

Staff who deal with clients, with Multiple and Profound Disabilities, in a health or social care setting.

COURSE AIMS

This full-day course is designed for people who may be about to work with people with multiple disabilities, or those who are currently working in the field who wish to learn more about the current, and most positive, approaches to care and treatment. The emphasis throughout the session is upon the relationship between carers and service-users. The course will encourage participants to use the latest methods of communication with this service-user group, and to adapt them for use with the people they care for, using the medium of the therapeutic relationship. The session will also focus upon the need to maintain optimum physical health in this service user-group, including areas such as nutrition and posture.

  • The causes of multiple and profound disability
  • The holistic perspective and the therapeutic relationship
  • Physical difficulties associated with multiple and   profound disability
  • Care of direct physical symptoms – the team approach
  • Potential physical problems and their prevention
  • Communication strategies
  • Carer support

DELIVERY/ASSESSMENT

Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion.

Learner’s knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning.
