Quick Overview

An understanding of the theory that underpins good ‘Moving and Handling’ technique is key for all care workers (Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) and Adult Social Care Workers (ASCW) who may be required to move and handle people in a safe way that provides greater comfort and dignity to the individual. This course represents a key induction requirement, and an ideal complement to the ‘Care Certificate’.



Support Workers who are new to the field of Health and Social Care and are undertaking the Care Certificate
Experienced Support Workers who are undertaking the Care Certificate or who require refresher training in mandatory topics

Support Workers who are undertaking QCF Diplomas in Health and Social Care


To ensure candidates are aware of the need to move and position people in accordance with recognised procedure
To ensure candidates know the importance of moving and positioning people in accordance with a person-centred risk assessment and care plan


By the end of the course candidates will be able to:

  • Discuss anatomical and health conditions relating to Moving and Positioning
  • Outline legislation relating to Moving and Positioning
  • Reduce and control risks relating to Moving and Positioning
  • Preparing Individuals for Moving and Positioning
  • Discuss safe methods of Moving and Positioning individuals
  • Access help and support in relation to Moving and Positioning


The course is divided into the following units:

  • Basic anatomy and relevant Health Conditions
  • Controlling Risks
  • Safely Moving Individuals
  • Accessing Support
  • Assessment


Candidates’ knowledge is assessed using a multiple-choice test, which is designed to ensure that the course text must be read and absorbed. Any written material resulting from the activities can be shown to the candidates’ QCF assessor to help them meet the knowledge specifications of the relevant unit


The course is mapped to meet all of the knowledge specifications of the following QCF Units:

QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2 – Unit 4222-232

QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3 – Unit 4222-232
