Quick Overview

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate first aid cover. This three day First Aid at Work is for employees who work in environments with higher hazards and risks based on their needs assessment. You will earn the first aid at work (FAW) certificate, which is valid for three years.

WHO IS THE COURSE DESIGNED FOR? 

Staff who are nominated as First Aider's in the workplace, or for those employees wanting a more detailed introduction to First Aid. The course is recommended for the work place First Aider and complies with current Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

The delivery of the course is set out over three day’s covering a wide range of first aid emergencies and how to deal with them confidently and efficiently.

On successful completion of the course, and required physical assessments, candidates will be awarded a ‘First Aid at Work’ certificate approved for the purpose of the Health and Safety (first aid) regulations 1981, which is valid for three years.

COURSE AIMS

To enable staff to respond positively and effectively to a variety of common injuries and illnesses, prior to the arrival of qualified medical assistance.

COURSE TOPICS/STRUCTURE

Understanding the role of a First Aider including reference to :

  • The importance of cross infection;
  • The need for recording incidents and infection;
  • Use if available equipment;

Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act in a safe/prompt and effective manner in an emergency

  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty who is unconscious ( including seizure)
  • Administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty who is choking
  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Administering First Aid to a Casualty who is suffering from shock
  • Providing appropriate First Aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters.
  • Recognising the presence of major illnesses and provide appropriate First Aid ( including Heart attack, Stroke, Epilepsy, Asthma, Diabetes

Administering First Aid to a Casualty with:

  • Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries;
  • Chest injuries;
  • Burns and Scalds;
  • Eye injuries;
  • Sudden poisoning;
  • Anaphylactic shock

ASSESSMENT

There are two practical assessments carried out at the end of the course, (CPR skills, and Incident Management)

Duration of training: 3 days

The amended Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations came into force on 1 October 2013. In accordance with the new guidelines SecuriCare have demonstrated their status as a ‘Competent Training Provider’. This involved meeting all the stipulated criteria including all of the following

  • The qualifications expected of trainers and assessors
  • Monitoring and quality assurance systems
  • Teaching and standards of first-aid practice
  • Syllabus content
  • Certification
