Health and Safety legislation obliges employers to protect their employees from work related violence (Abuse, threats and assaults). Part of this process is providing front-line staff with adequate and appropriate training. This Trainer's Course will provide the successful candidate with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach others physical interventions, disengagement and breakaway techniques inline with organisational needs and risk assessments.

WHO IS THE DELIVERING PHYSICAL INTERVENTION - BREAKAWAY TRAINING COURSE DESIGNED FOR? 

Individuals who are responsible for delivering physical intervention (breakaway) training to staff

The course is suitable for individuals with or without previous experience of delivering ‘Physical Intervention’ training.

COURSE AIMS

To develop staff knowledge, skill and competence in the delivery of a range of physical skills including breakaway and intervention techniques.

To prepare trainers to deliver instruction in physical intervention

To prepare trainers to assess learning in relation to physical intervention

COURSE TOPICS/STRUCTURE 

  • Be able to reduce the risks in preparation for physical intervention training
  • Understand how to safely and effectively manage the learning environment for physical intervention skills
  • Understanding how age and physical development affects the use of physical contact or intervention
  • Common contra-indications for use of physical interventions
  • The difference between "escorting", "touching" and "holding"
  • Understanding and applying the "gradient of control" concept
  • Avoiding potentially dangerous postures and positions
  • Known mechanisms for injury and fatality
  • Active and reactive monitoring strategies
  • Appropriate aftercare and support
  • Course content is finalised following a full training needs analysis.

DELIVERY/ASSESSMENT

Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion.

Learner’s knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning.
