This short online course provides staff with an overview of how to manage the risks and protect their backs. Can be supplemented with a practical classroom training session.

WHO IS THE COURSE DESIGNED FOR? 

Staff who may be required to move objects, lifts items or transport loads physically. (It would also benefit managers and supervisors in order that they understand their duties and responsibilities, as well as those of employees/staff)

COURSE AIMS

To provide an awareness of best practice to those undertaking any and all forms of manual handling. (This course may be supplemented by hands-on and supervised classroom practice where deemed appropriate)

COURSE TOPICS/STRUCTURE 

By the end of this course learners will be able to:

  • List the main statutory requirements of both employers and employees in relation to manual handling and general safety in the workplace
  • Explain the structure of the spine, including the spinal column, spinal cord and the spinal discs
  • Explain the functions of muscles, tendons and ligaments
  • Explain the types of injury that may occur from lifting and handling loads
  • Explain what a T-I-L-E pre-lift risk assessment involves
  • Explain how the body should be positioned before attempting a lift
  • Explain good handling techniques for lifting workplace objects
  • Explain good handling techniques for pushing and pulling a workplace object
  • Describe the various types of handling devices and in what situations they may be used

ASSESSMENT

Candidates’ knowledge is assessed using a multiple-choice test, which is designed to ensure that the course text must be read and absorbed.
