Principles and Practice of Positive Behaviour Support training course provides a thorough understanding of the principles of 'Positive Behaviour Support'. These principals are essential if organisations intend to provide high quality support and minimise the potential for restrictive interventions. This course enables and empowers staff to reduce the use of restrictive interventions. The use of PBS is a key tenet of the Department of Health’s ‘Positive & Proactive Care’ initiative.



Staff working in care settings and who support individuals who may exhibit behaviours that challenge. It can also serve as an important prelude for staff who may be moving on to learn physical disengagement / intervention skills

Principles and Practice of Positive Behaviour Support COURSE AIMS

To build on existing knowledge by looking at the causes of ‘Challenging Behaviour’, and examining proactive measures as well as reactive strategies that staff can utilise to prevent positively manage ‘Challenging Behaviours’


  • How organisations can achieve a greater understanding of the causes of challenging behaviour by completing an initial behavioural assessment.
  • Understanding the role of the environment in the occurrence of challenging behaviours.
  • Establishing strategies for environmental change.
  • Understanding the role of primary prevention in the reduction and/or elimination of challenging behaviours.
  • Identifying, developing and implementing a bespoke range of primary and secondary prevention strategies.


Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion. (The length of the course is determined following a training needs analysis).

Learners knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning, and will include a Multiple Choice Test
