A 3-day open course covering the skills required to prevent and manage challenging behaviour in the social care setting. 

Duration: 3-day Initial Course

Day 1: Preventing & Managing Challenging Behaviour Theory

Day 2: Positive responses to physically challenging behaviour

Day 3: Recap and continuation of day 2 plus introduction to safe holding and relocation techniques

Times: 9.15 – 16:00 each day

This Preventing and Managing Challenging Behaviour classroom course is aimed at staff working in care settings. They will typically support individuals may exhibit behaviours that cause difficulties for themselves and/or other people. This course may also serve as an important prelude for staff who may be moving on to learn physical disengagement/intervention skills. It covers the principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)


To build on existing knowledge by looking at the causes of Challenging Behaviour, and examining proactive measures as well as reactive strategies that staff can utilise to prevent positively manage Challenging Behaviours. Managing challenging behaviour training should always be done before physical intervention training.

Managing Challenging Behaviour Course Covers:

  • Definitions of ‘Challenging Behaviour’
  • Aggression as a normal response to threat or fear: trigger factors
  • Causes of aggression and other challenging behaviours
  • Understanding the possible functions of behaviour
  • The role of ‘active support’, ‘enhanced communication’ and ‘positive behaviour support’ in preventing ‘challenging behaviour’
  • Recognising the early warning signs
  • Communication skills
  • De-escalation skills
  • Recording, reporting and reflection
  • Person-centred planning and preventing challenging behaviour


  • Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion. (The length of the course is determined following a training needs analysis).
  • Learners knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning and will include a multiple choice test.
