WHO IS THE COURSE DESIGNED FOR?
Preventing & Managing Challenging Behaviour and Physical Intervention course is aimed at staff working in educational settings and/or with students or young persons who may exhibit behaviours that cause difficulties for themselves and/or other people. This course includes both preventative, non-physical and physical intervention skills including an introduction to Positive Behaviour Principles (PBS)
PREVENTING AND MANAGING CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR COURSE AIMS
To build on existing knowledge by looking at the causes of Challenging Behaviour, and examining proactive measures as well as reactive physical strategies that staff can utilise to prevent positively manage Challenging Behaviours
COURSE TOPICS/STRUCTURE
UNIT 1: Preventative/Non-Physical Interventions
- Define challenging behaviour
- Identify the triggers and functions of challenging behaviour
- Positive behaviour support (PBS)
- Person centred approaches
- Identify strategies for defusing incidents, support safe practice and actions before, during and after an incident
- To understand how we can be affected during an incident, and how to control our own responses
- Reporting and recording incident
- Identify the post incident strategies
UNIT 2: Physical Interventions
- Identify the law and the use of force
- Discuss current guidance and best practice for PI reduction
- To be competent in the use of disengaging and physical intervention techniques
ASSESSMENT
Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion.
Learner’s knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning.
