Quick Overview

The SecuriCare 'Licensed Trainer Award' will allow the successful candidate to deliver 'Preventing and Managing Challenging Behaviour' Training at their chosen level: Theory Only; Theory and Disengagement Techniques; or Theory, Disengagement and Physical Intervention Techniques. It is highly recommended that candidates hold a recognised QCF Training Award at Level 3 or higher (please see related products left). The SecuriCare Licensed Trainer will undergo training over an agreed period to meet their chosen training need. The skill set for physical techniques will be agreed as part of the training needs analysis process.



Individuals who are responsible for delivering training to staff how to respondsafely and effectively to 'challenging behaviour'.

The course is suitable for individuals with or without previous experience of delivering ‘Physical Intervention’ training.

SecuriCare are an ICM Quality Award centre (as recognised by the Dept. of Health in 'Positive & Proactive Care')..


To develop staff knowledge in relation to preventing and managing 'challenging behaviour' (before it becomes 'physical')
To develop staff knowledge, skill and competence in delivering of a range of physical skills including breakaways and holding/intervention techniques.
To prepare trainers to deliver instruction in physical skills (breakaways & holds)
To prepare trainers to assess learning in relation to physical skills (breakaways & holds)



  • Definitions of ‘Challenging Behaviour’ 
  • Aggression as a normal response to threat or fear
  • Causes of challenging behaviours and factors effecting anindividuals behaviour
  • Understanding the possible functions of behaviour
  • Preventing ‘challenging behaviour’ by meeting individuals needs 
  • Recognising the early warning signs and responding in a timely manner
  • Communication skills - Ensuring a two-way process
  • De-escalation skills Reducing tension, frustration or distress
  • Recording, reporting and reflection
  • Person-centred planning and preventing challenging behaviour (key for social care staff)

Course content is finalised following a full training needs analysis.


  • How to reduce the risks in preparation for physical skills training
  • Understand how to safely and effectively manage the learning environment for physical intervention skills
  • Understanding how age and physical development affects the use of physical contact or intervention
  • Common contra-indications for use of physical interventions
  • The difference between "escorting", "touching" and "holding"
  • Understanding and applying the "gradient of control" concept
  • Avoiding potentially dangerous postures and positions
  • Known mechanisms for injury and fatality
  • Appropriate breakaway/disengagement techniques
  • Appropriate physical intervention techniques
  • Active and reactive monitoring strategies
  • Appropriate aftercare and support
  • A client specific person centred programme can be designed to meet the unique needs of staff and service users and to be in-line with appropriate care plans and risk assessments

Course content is finalised following a full training needs analysis.


Formal presentation, group work, practical exercises and discussion.

Learner’s knowledge is evidenced by verbal or written questioning.
