Developing Policy and Guidelines
In order for work related violence to be managed effectively, an organisation must have a central policy document. To help with this key stage in the process, SecuriCare have produced a pro-forma policy document that is free to download.
You will then need to complete local risk assessments. These will identify the specific local actions that re required to eliminate, reduce or control the risk of violence.
Preventative and protective measures may include:
- The development of procedures for staff to follow when undertaking a specific task or when managing a situation that increases the risk of staff exposure to violent behaviour. These include: lone working practices; travelling safely from A to B; transporting cash or other valuables; handling complaints; upholding policy or the law; delivering bad news or a negative message; working with service users with challenging behaviour problems (e.g. people with physical or mental health or learning disabilities); working with service users who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- The formulation of guidance on how staff should respond to violent behaviour. This may include: how to respond to disruptive, challenging, angry or aggressive service users/customers, as well as confronting those engaging in criminal activities and or threatening physical violence
- The production of guidance on the ‘use of force’ or ‘physical intervention’. This may include the requirement for staff to protect themselves or service users, and to temporarily stabilise, restrain or relocate violent or dangerous individuals. This could include those engaging in deliberate self injurious behaviour
- The commissioning of suitable and sufficient training for frontline staff. This may include:
- Prevention and risk reduction strategies
- Calming, defusing and de-escalation techniques
- Avoidance and disengagement (breakaway) skills
- Safe holding, restraint or other physical interventions
- If you need any further assistance in reviewing or developing such arrangements do not hesitate to contact SecuriCare.
