In addition to our wide range of care courses and preventing and managing Challenging behaviour training programmes, SecuriCare have always had a particular focus on safe ‘Breakaway Training’ and safe Physical intervention training. A tremendous amount of work is afoot at present centring on how restraint can be eliminated. A key thrust of all the various restraint reduction initiatives is learning from those incidents where physical intervention techniques are used. In order to do this there needs to be a consistent approach to how incidents are handled and information gathered after any PI application. To this end SecuriCare have developed a downloadable Post Incident/Physical Intervention checklist in handy pdf format. Download it HERE

The study of ‘Human Factors’ refers to a critical examination of environmental, organisational and job factors, as well as human and individual characteristics, which influence how people behave at work and how it may lead to compromises in health and safety. Staff typically don’t set out to make the wrong decisions or engage in unsafe behaviours. Tare often ‘set up to fail’ by the way their brain processes information, by poor training, through badly formulated or inconstantly implemented policy/procedures as well as so-called corrupted work cultures.

It’s crucial that organisations start to learn from what’s come to pass in order that safer futures can be delivered. Within the context of challenging behaviour or behavioural distress it’s crucial that the application of physical intervention techniques are critically scrutinised in order that the overall use of restrictive practices can be reduced or ideally eliminated.  In order to ensure a consistent approach is taken to processing incidents SecuriCare have developed a Post Incident/Physical Intervention checklist in handy pdf format. Research has shown that a simple checklist during major operations can cut deaths by more than 40% and complications by more than 30%. As a consequence the National Patient Safety Agency  ordered all hospitals in England and Wales to use the checklist, which was originally devised by the World Health Organization.
